人を排除する際に、出てくる口語表現。

“out of” は「から外へ」。
この “out” は副詞（または形容詞、解釈は二様）。

“picture” には、名詞（可算名詞）と他動詞がある。
基本的意味は、
– 名詞「絵」「写真」「状況」
– 他動詞「図示する」「想像する」

“out of the picture” では名詞で、
この用法では “the” をつける。

よって、直訳は「状況から外へ」。
be動詞（is、wasなど）を伴い、
「状況からいなくなる」。

“Out of sight, out of mind.”
（去る者日々に疎し。）
と同じく、視界から消えれば無存在に。

転じて「状況に関係している」。

“I want him in the picture.”
（彼にも関わってもらいたい。）

“I am still in the picture.”
（私はまだ関わっている。）

先述の通り、”out of the picture” は、
どこか冷たさを伴うことの多い表現である。

人を切り捨てるような感じ悪さがあり、
状況次第では、ぞっとする冷酷な印象をもたらす。
気心の知れた仲間であれば誤解はないかもしれないが、
使用する際は要注意。

“They put me out of the picture after the failure.”
（その失敗後、私はのけ者にされた。）

“She is now out of the picture so don’t tell her.”
（彼女はもう無関係だから、伝えなくてよい。）

“Get him out of the picture.”
（彼を排除して。）

“That player became sick and went out of the picture.”
（あの選手は病気になり、消えてしまった。）

“He will win since she is out of the picture now.”
（彼女がいなくなったので、彼は勝つだろう。）
