犯人は誰だ？
れっきとした英語である。
【発音】 huːdʌ́nit
「フダネッ」などと聞こえる。
“whodunnit“（nが2つ） とつづることもある。
“Who done it ? “（誰がやったのか）の略。
文法的には “Who had done it ? ” が正式。
“Who did it ? ” とほぼ同義。

定訳は「推理小説」と「探偵小説」
「推理小説」の方が、一般的。
特に、殺人犯の解明が中心の小説を指す。
同種の映画や劇を含むことがある。
日本でも「フ－ダニット」のまま、
推理小説の分類として確立している。
アガサ・クリスティの『オリエント急行の殺人』
（1934年刊）は、「フ－ダニット」を代表する
推理小説である。
◆ 本稿で “Whodunit” を取り上げるのは、
用途が＜小説の分類＞に収まらないから。
実際の事件報道にも起用される。
趣旨「犯人は誰だ？」
文字通り “Who done it ? “。
◆ 以下の英英辞典3点すべてが、”informal” と表記する。
つまり、くだけた表現で正式な言い回しではない。
大半の辞書では “slang” 扱いされていない模様。
上掲の有力語源サイト “ETYMONLINE” には “U.S. slang“
とあるものの、むしろ例外的である。

ごく普通の可算名詞（countable noun）である。
それでも、深刻な内容の記事に “whodunit”の字面が踊ると、
「ふざけているのか」と不謹慎に感じてしまったりする。

一見すると、ニュースなのか書評なのか、よく分からない。

“Whodunit” とあるから、てっきり新作ミステリーの
レビューだと心弾ませて読み始めたところ、
中身は現実に起きた凄惨な事件で驚いたことがある。
その時のショックは忘れられない。
