この  ” quits ”  の語源は、

下記の自動詞・他動詞  ” quit “（ やめる ） ではない。

【発音】  kwít  （1音節）
【活用形】  quits – quitted – quitted – quitting

” Cry quits.”（ 引き分け ）として、
17世紀頃から使われていた。

日本の参考書には、” quit ” の変化形
と書いてあるものもあったりする。

これは間違い。

 

◆  ” call it quits ” の本来の用法は、今も残る 。

• 借金を ちゃらにする
• 勝負を 引き分けにする

より一般的なのは、 表題の 「 終わりにする 」。

発音しやすく、 見栄えのするフレーズなので、
口頭・文面不問で多用される。

「 終止符を打つ 」 や 「 もうやーめた 」 など、
状況に応じ柔軟に表現できる。
