ホテルやフライトの「コンファーム」
それが、自他動詞 “confirm” である。

語源は、ラテン語「確実にする」（confirmāre）。

【発音】 kənfə́ːrm

ニュースでは、１）が圧倒的に頻出。
“pronounced dead“（後述）と同じく、
決まり文句である。

１）be動詞に続く場合は、他動詞 “confirm” の
過去分詞 “confirmed”（確認された）＋
形容詞 “dead”（死んでいる）で、
「死亡が確認された」。

• “He was confirmed dead at a hospital.”
  （病院にて彼の死亡が確認された。）
  ※ 通常の訃報では、単に「彼は病院で死亡した」
  と和訳される。

• “10 people were confirmed dead.”
  （10名の死亡が確認された。）

２）”confirmed dead” が名詞形の場合は、
形容詞 “confirmed”（確認された）+
名詞 “dead”（死者）で、
「確認された死者」。

本義は形容詞である “dead”（死んだ状態）を、
名詞「死者」として使う場合は、
“the” をつけるのが通例。

よって、”the confirmed dead”
と出てくるケースが多い。

“the dead” は文法上は複数扱いとなるので、
“the confirmed dead” も複数扱い。

• “Many of the confirmed dead were elderly people.”
  （亡くなった方の多くが高齢者でした。）

◆ 特に２）の用法では、「確認された」は
省略して和訳される場合が多い。
死者報道の前提として、確認済みとされるから。

この点、 “pronounced dead” 及び
“declared dead” と似ている。
