自殺した

自殺者が男性なら、所有格は “his” で、
“took his own life”。

女性であれば “took her own life”。
複数名なら “took their own lives”。

直訳は「自分の命を取る（奪う）」。
“own”（自分の） を抜けば、
「（彼・彼女を）殺した」。

“suicide” の語源は、ラテン語の
「自分殺し」（suīcīda）。

すなわち、
“sui”（自身）＋ “cide”（殺し）。

“suicide” は英語ネイティブであれば、
小学生でも理解できる単語であるものの、
“took own life” の方が分かりやすいだろう。

◆ 自殺は、実行後に描写されることが圧倒的に多い。

そのため、時制は過去形 “took” が最多。
また、過去分詞 “has taken his/her own life”
もよく出てくる。

◆ ニュースでは、現在形 “take” や
現在進行形 “taking” はほとんど見聞きしない。

自殺の性質上当然であろう。

主語が “I” になりにくいのも、同様の理由による。
