「憶測」といえば、名詞  ” speculation ” 。

【発音】  spèkjəléiʃən
【音節】  spec-u-la-tion  （4音節）

確実でない情報に基づく推論は日常にあふれる。

あっという間に情報が広まる（ go viral ）、この ご時世  では、
確かな情報源をたどる方が難しいくらいだ。

動詞は、” speculate “。

【発音】  spékjəlèit
【音節】  spec-u-late  （3音節）   

語源は、ラテン語「見張った」（speculātus）。

【活用形】  speculates – speculated – speculated – speculating

自動詞と他動詞がある 。

基本的意味はどちらも「憶測する」。

その直後の前置詞または接続詞で違いが出るのが原則。

–  自動詞   speculate  about、 as to、 on、 upon
–  他動詞   speculate  that

 

◆  “speculate” と “speculation” には、「 憶測（する）」
以外に「 熟考（する） 」の意味がある。

「いいかげんにおしはかる」でなく、頭を使って考えること。

文法面が同じで、直後に続く単語（”about”、”on” など）まで共通する。

どちらの意味を指すかは文脈より判断する。

 

◆ 「憶測」と「熟考」では、受け手の印象がだいぶ異なるため、
時に翻訳者泣かせである。

日常使用では「憶測」の方が多めな感じ。

だが、「憶測」も「熟考」も確実性には欠ける。

たとえ真面目に頭を使い、深く考えたとしても、
その根拠に不確実な要素が残る点に変わらない。

そのため、迷った場合は「 推測（する） 」「 考える 」
といった、無難な和訳で済ます翻訳者が多い。

  （彼の犯罪の動機について考えていたのです。）

” what ” や ” why ” などの【 wh節 】が、
” speculate ” に続く際、前置詞は略されることが多い。

上記例文では、”speculating” の直後に、
“on” “about” “as to” などを入れてもよい。

◆  “speculation” は 「 投機 」 をも意味する。

大半の人の日常に疎遠だろうが、ビジネスには大切な用法。

「投機する」の “speculate” は自動詞のみ。

続く前置詞は “in” と “on” のいずれかがほとんど。

• “I want to speculate in the company’s stocks.”
  （その会社の株をやってみたい。）
