こちらの 「 清廉潔白な人物 」 と並び、
人品骨柄に対する最大級の賛辞に活用される。

名詞  ” caliber ” は、可算・不可算兼用。

この用途の  ” caliber ” は、不可算。

” a man of caliber ”  の  ” a ” は、
可算名詞  ” man ” についたもの。

格言・成句・ことわざに使われる ” man ” であり、
男女不問 の不特定な 「 人 」。

頻出レベルには至らないものの、
月並みな言い回しではなく、好印象。

世間一般の 「 銃 」 のイメージが影響していると、 私は推察する。

すなわち、 無骨すぎて、 女性にそぐわない感じ。

ところが、 銃 ” gun ”  の語源は、 女性名 ” Gunilda “。

14世紀から使われている。

その他、” Gunnhild ”  や  ” Gunnhildr ”  など諸説あるが、
とにかく女性由来。

そのため、 銃砲には女性名がつけられるのが、 長年の慣習。

なのに、 ” caliber ” に女性の出番が目立たないのは、 残念な話 である。
