人生の教訓
文字通り「人生のレッスン」。

■ “life” は、名詞のみの単語。
可算名詞と不可算名詞を兼ねる。
語源は、古英語「命」（līf）。
ここでは、可算名詞「人生」。

■ “lesson” には、名詞と他動詞がある。
語源は、ラテン語「読むこと」（lēctiō）。
名詞は、カタカナ「レッスン」と似た意味合い。–
“lesson learned“（学んだ教訓）とも重なる。
レッスン【lesson】
1. 稽古。練習。
2. 学課。課。教程。

他動詞は「教える」「訓戒する」。
他動詞用法は現在ではまれ。
《古》と表記するのは、『ジーニアス英和大辞典』
や『ランダムハウス英和大辞典 第2版』。
つまり、”lesson” は名詞用法が基本。
可算名詞である。
先の広辞苑の語釈以外の基本的意味は、
「教訓」「懲らしめ」「見せしめ」。
表題では「教訓」。
人生全体から学ぶ「教訓」は多いため、
複数形 “lessons” になるのが通例。
所有格語尾を用いた “life’s lessons” の代わりに、
“life lessons” と書くこともある。
意味は同じ。

or principles can be learned.

特定の教えを示す場合、冠詞は “the”、
そうでない場合、無冠詞が多い。
- “I learned the life’s lessons the hard way.”
（苦しみを経て、人生の教えを学んだ。）
若い人のみならず、中高年に対しても使われる。
うまくいかなかった事業や離婚を指して、
「人生の教訓」と言ったりする。
人生の試練は、死ぬまで続くということなのだろう。
なお、同義の頻出表現に、
- “learn my (his / her) lesson”
（懲りた果てに、教訓を得る）
があるが、こちらの “lesson” は単数形。
